The Fencer's Unlucky Final Day

U-23 fencer’s European Championship ended today in Tbilisi. On the final day, the medals were awarded in the rest three categories: in men epee, men foil and women saber.

Five teams participated in women saber. No.5 seeded Georgian fencers (Teodora Kakhiani, Mariam Pkhakadze, Kristine Nozadze, Elene Nanobashvili) lost to Polish team 22:45 and took the fifth place.

In semifinal, Russia won over Poland 45:30 and Italian fencers defeated Belarus 45:43. In the meeting for the third place, Belarus won over Poland 45:41 and in final, the confrontation between the favorite teams ended with the Russian victory – 45:41. .

In ¼ final, Georgian national fencer team in men’s foil (Luka Gaganidze, Archil Ugulava, Sandro Sikharulidze, Lasha Galuashvili) lost to Italy 25:45. The Georgians lost to Turkey 40:45 in the fight for the 5th-8th places and took the 6th place.

The final in men’s foil was held between Russia and Italy again. Russia won over Belarus 45:26 and Italy overcame Great Britain 45:21.

The final turned to be tense for the tournament’s favorites and finally Russia won 45:42. Belarus gained the bronze medal, which beat Great Britain 45:39.

Eleven teams took part on the final day in men’s epee. The Georgian team (Mikhael Mikhaelian, Nikoloz Zurabishvili, Giorgi Kapianidze, Irakli Ambroladze) lost to Denmark 20:45.

In semifinal Germany beat Russia 45:37 and Italy defeated Poland 45:34. In final Italy won 45:43. In the meeting for the third place, Russia overcame Poland 45:41.

The Georgian fencers occupied the fourth place. In boy’s saber, the Georgians (Mikheil Mardaleishvili, Sandro Bazadze, Luka Oboladze, Saba Sulamanidze) defeated Belarus 45:35, in the meeting for the bronze medal. Sandro Bazadze won the gold medal. In final, he overcame the Russian Alexander Trushakov 15:7 and became the European champion among U-23.
