The winners in all 7 weight categories were already declared in the current World Championship in freestyle wrestling in Budapest. The Georgian freestyle wrestling team ended this main tournament of this season with only one bronze medal.
The last set of medals were drawn on Wednesday – the wrestlers in 74 kg weight categories wrestled on the carpet. Iakob Makarashvili, debutant of the team, wrestled and he was one victory away from the pedestal.
Makarashvili won over Canadian James Macdonald 8:5 and went through the 1/16 final, where he lost to Iranian Ezzatollah Akbari – 0:7.
The Georgian wrestler overcame Alexandru Burca (8:0) of Moldova, Yunierk Blanco Morasa of Cuba (2:2) and Sosuke Takatani of Japan (6:4) in repechage. In the bronze final, he lost to Rashid Kurbanov, member of Uzbek team, (4:11) and took the 5th place.
Three days ago, before the start of World Championship, if you ask any Georgians aware in wrestling, everyone should consider more experienced wrestles of the team as a main favorites in the battle for the highest title. It was even logical. Four members of the seven, has never wrestled in the World Championship. Among them, more experienced was Geno Petriashvili, who who wrestled in the Euro Championship and took the bronze medal. Levan Kelekhsashvili (66 kg), Jakob Makarashvili (74 kg) and Davit Kerashvili (96 kg) became the leaders a few months ago in the inside competition.
It is no surprise that everybody were in hope of Giorgi Edisherashvili (55 kg), Davit Marsagashvili (84 kg) and Vladimer Khinchegashvili (60 kg), but they could not pass ¼ final. And the debutants of Georgia, on the contrary, showed themselves very well. Petriashvili became a bronze winner and Kelekhsashvili, Makarashvili and Kerashvili took the 5th place.
On Thursday only women will wrestle. And from Friday to Sunday, the seven trained by Otar Tatishvili will participate in Greco-Roman wrestling.
