Disqualificaton of Marsagishvili and Makarashvili was Declined

Georgian wrestling Federation changed 6-month disqualification of Davit Marsagishvili (84kg) and Iakob Makarashvili (74kg), current European Champions and Georgian freestyle wrestling members, with suspended sentence. Recall that Luka Kurtanidze, president of the Georgian wrestling national federation, stated about their disqualification 2 weeks ago at the press conference. Unprofessional approach to the case was named as a reason due which the team participated with weakened staff in Moscow at “European Nations Cup” and lost.

According to the official statements, condemned wrestlers were forbidden to participate in domestic or in international tournaments until May 2014, but 2 days ago Davit Marsagishvili wrestled at the “Golden Grand Prix” of Baku and won the bronze medal. To better clarify the situation, “World Sport” contacted Luka Kurtanidze.

“We alleviated punishment to Marsagishvili and Makarashvili and gave them suspended sentence. We have made this decision after the famous Georgian wrestlers applied us with a petition. Co-founders of “Champions Club”, Mikheil Saladze, Guram Sagaradze and Nodar Modebadze asked us refrain from harsh sanction. Vice-president of the federation Bakur Gogitidze and general secretary Giorgi Lomidze also joined their request. Regarding with it and the official comment of Davit Marsagishvili, where he stated that he felt guilty, we decided to withdraw restrictions. However we left them suspended sentence, which means, that if Marsagishvili and Makarashvili violate even the easier form of discipline, the original sentence will be reduplicated” – said Kurtanidze.

President of wrestling federation also said that this issue would be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the presidium on December 18 and the special disciplinary committee will be also approved, which will react fast on the similar violations.

“The disciplinary committee functioned before too, but only on paper. In the near future, it will become much more businesslike and efficient. Progress is impossible without discipline” – added Kurtanidze.
