Luka Kurtanidze: "I Will Participate in the Preparation Process of the Team"

Important changes will be made in coaching staff of Georgian freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling teams. Luka Kurtanidze, president of Georgian Wrestling Federation, informed journalists today. Only Kurtanidze talked at the press conference which evaluated the results of the Georgian teams at World Championship. Coaches and wrestlers were sitting in the hall and made brief comments after the end of the press conference.

“Some considers bronze medal of our freestyle wrestling team as success at World Championship. I cannot agree with these people. The third place among 91 countries is not bad but not for Georgia which has ambition in wrestling.

I understand critic of disappointed fans. I have no pretension toward the sportsmen. They did their best. We must seek problem in mobilization and discipline of the team. I did not interfere in competence of the coaches but it turned out to be necessary. I can be more useful for the team.

I expected at least 4 medals from the freestyle wrestling team. Of course, I am disappointed with the final result. I have no pretension toward Greco-Romans. Six debutants wrestled and they gained a great experience. As for the only experienced sportsman Revaz Lashkhi, he has a weight problem and he will change his weight category for sure.

The Georgian Championship is ahead and domestic competition will be increased. I am sure we will have the strongest team for Olympic Games 2016.

As for the changes, I will discuss it with coaches on 15 November. They will sign contracts till upcoming Olympic Games to let them work calmly” – stated Luka Kurtanidze.

The president of the federation stated German specialists will participate in the practice of the Georgian teams.

“The Germans are the best at it. I have 12-year collaboration with this group and I am sure it will be useful for our wrestling teams” – added Kurtanidze.

“World Sport” asked Otar Tatishvili, head coach of the Greco-Roman wrestling team, if the team had optimal staff at World Championship. Tatishvili told us Budapest World Championship was the first step of the preparation stage for Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

Revaz Mindorashvili, head coach of the freestyle wrestling team, stated some factors played a key role in the failure of his team. Referees made some mistakes. The coach added they will show their possibilities in the future.
