Bronze Finish

Georgian national junior judo team ended the World Championship with 3 medals and 3rd place. Today Levan Matiashvili (+100kg) added bronze medal to the gold of Beka Gvinianishvili (90kg) and bronze of Leri Chelidze (55kg).

At the final, 4th, day of the Championship, champions and prize winners in men were revealed in 2 heaviest weight categories. Guram Tushishvili (100kg) and Giorgi Zakariadze (+100kg) participated besides Matiashvili.

The Georgian team was clearly unlucky in heavyweight category. Winners of the recent European Championship, Levan Matiashvili (silver) and Giorgi Zakariadze (bronze) were in the same draw. Their roads crossed in the ¼ final.

Matiashvili started competition from the 2nd circle, where he defeated French Emre Sanal in 21 seconds. Zakariadze gained 2 victories before the ¼ final: at first he overcame Uzbek Elior Masharipov and then made Harun Sadikovic of Bosnia and Herzegovina get 4 warnings until the end of the 3rd minute.

The fate of the Georgian quarter-finals also decided Shido. The referee just used only 6 warnings and 4of them got Zakariadze.

In the semifinal, Matiashvili was unable to take revenge on Russian Anton Krivobokov for the defeat in the final of the European Championship. At the end of the first minute, the referee in a completely equal fight unfairly warned Georgian judoka. Levan attacked actively, but in one episode he made a mistake and ended up on hold. In the repechage final, he won over Japanese Ysao Kurahashi by Waza-ari.

Zakariadze was one step behind the pedestal – in the fight for bronze, he managed to win by waza-ari against Brazilian Ruan Silva, but at the last seconds he lost by waza-ari. Finaly, the Georgian took the 5th place.

Guram Tushishvili arrived in Slovenia as current Europe Champion, but he finished his participation at the World Championship from the initial round against German Leon Shtrober. At the start of the 2nd minute, when the account was Yuko to Yuko, referee-table considered that the Georgian used an illegal way. On the one hand, to notice violation was difficult and this caused resentment of fans on social networks. Official website of the Georgian Judo Federation posted the comment of Niko Zautashvili, International category referee.

“Guram Tushishvili performed a dangerous technique, which could cause injury of the opponent. Such act is forbidden, that’s why the referees did the right thing when they withdrew him” – said Zautashvili.

Tomorrow the World Team Championship will be held. According to the preliminary data, teams of 8 countries will be involved, including Georgia.
