Next time – Adam Okruashvili, heavyweight of the Georgian judo team, promised Teddy Riner of France after the final of European Championship this year. The Georgian judoka had a chance of revenge at Brazilian World Championship. Okruashvili wrestled against the French in semifinal but… This time the French wrestled much better than the Georgian and beat him by waza-ari. In final Riner defeated host Rafael Silva and proved once again that he is the best in heavyweight category.
In repechage final Adam Okruashvili lost to Faicel Jaballah of Tunis and finally took the fifth place.
Before this fight, Okruashvili defeated three opponents: Derek Sua of Samoa by waza-ari, Maciej Sarnacki of Poland by waza-ari-ippon. In ¼ final Okruashvili won over Alexander Mikhaylin of Russia.
Levan Zhorzholiani, vice-president of Georgian Judo Federation, wrestled in 100 kg. He left sport but because of not having a participant in this category the managers of the federation asked him to wrestle.
Zhorzholiani started participation from 1/16 final. He beat Stephane Ombiongno of Cameroon but then lost to Cyrille Maret of France.
Elkhan Mammadov of Azerbaijani won in 100 kg. In final the Azerbaijani judoka defeated Henk Grol of Holland. Dimitri Peters of Germany and Lukas Krpalek of Czech Republic took the third places.
So, the Georgian team finished World Championship with silver medals of Avtandil Chrikishvili (81 kg) and Varlam Liparteliani (90 kg). The team took the fifth place. But the main team championship will take place in Rio de Janeiro on September 1.
