The First Point at the European Championship: Georgia Could Have Won at the Last Second…

The Georgia national team played Czech Republic in the second round of the European Championship and gained the first point at the tournament. After Giorgi Mikautadze’s penalty, Patrik Schick scored a goal and draw – 1:1.

Unlike the previous match, there was only one change in the lineup of the Georgia national team – Giorgi Chakvetadze was replaced by Zuriko Davitashvili.

Willy Sagnol’s looked confused at the beginning of the match and at the 3rd minute Giorgi Mamardashvili earned three saves in a row.

Adam Hlozek scored the goal at the 23rd minute but the VAR review shows it was handball and the goal was disallowed. It was the second disallowed goal in the net of Georgia at the current European Championship.

At the 44th minute Guram Kashia missed a good chance of scoring a goal but before that Robin Hranac played with hand in the penalty area and the referee checked that earlier penalty using the VAR. The referee awarded the penalty and Giorgi Mikautadze scored – 1:0.

At the end of the first half Giorgi Mamardashvili earned another save and finished the half with 8 saves which is just fantastic result!

Georgia started the second half better but could not use good moments. However, Schick scored the goal at the 59th minute and 1:1. After this goal the Georgians made many mistakes. Mamardashvili was the best from our team. He held one of the best matches of his career.

At the last second Saba Lobjanidze was one on one with the goalkeeper but could not score the goal.

Georgia and Czech Republic have 1-1 point and Sagnol’s team need to beat Portugal in order to make through to playoffs.

Georgia will hold the third match against Portugal on June 26 in Gelsenkirchen.
