The 2020 European Championship finished with the anthem of Georgia in Rome, Italy. Geno Petriashvili (125 kg) won the first gold medal in freestyle wrestling for the Georgian delegation.
At European Championship Geno won all four bouts without any problem. He beat Spain’s Jose Cuba 10:0, Russia’s Baldan Tsyzhipov 11:0, Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khotsianivskyi 7:2 and Poland’s Robert Baran 11:0. Geno became champion of Europe for the second time.
Irakli Mtsituri (92 kg) was close to winning bronze medal. He defeated Kosovo’s Edon Shala 12:0 and Moldova’s Gheorghe Rubaev 7:5. Then, the Georgian failed to Turkey’s Suleyman Karadeniz 1:6 and continued wrestling in repechage where he fell to Azerbaijan’s Aslanbek Alborov 0:2.
As a result, the Georgian freestyle wrestling team finished the championship with 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. After Russia and Azerbaijan, Georgia took the third place with 95 points.
Before the freestyle wrestling team, the Georgian Greco-Roman wrestling team also competed in European Championship. The team took the fifth place with 4 medals (2 silver, 2 bronze).
