Vladimer Khinchegashvili: "I Am Happy that I Glorified My Father"

He is just 25 years old but has a lot of awards. The 25-year-old freestyle wrestler Vladimer Khinchegashvili arrived in Rio de Janeiro as European and current world champion. No one seemed to stop him on Carioca 2 Arena. Khinchegashvili celebrated four victories and won gold medal. The anthem of Georgia was played at the Olympics for the second time. So, this Olympics is more successful than the previous one. At London Olympics the Georgians won 1 gold and 3-3 silver-bronze medals. In Rio the Georgians have already had 2 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.

The whole Georgian delegation congratulated the Georgian champion when he entered the interview zone. Everybody took a photo with him and congratulated him on success.

World Sport asked questions to Khinchegashvili with some foreign journalists:

- You have been European and world champion. Today you became Olympic champion. What does this victory mean to you?

- First of all, it means that I achieved my goal.

- Georgia also has a great success in judo. Why did you choose wrestling and not judo?

- My father was a wrestler. He won Junior World Championship and passed away before I started wrestling. I am very happy that I glorified my father.

- How would you summarize the final against Rei Higuchi of Japan?

- He is a very good wrestler and in my opinion, he will achieve a lot.

- Have you known him?

- No, we have never wrestled before.

- Perhaps, you did not expect him making through to the final…

- This Japanese wrestler beat such tough opponents that I was not surprised to see him in the final.

- Who did you consider your main opponent?

- Haji Aliyev of Azerbaijan in my draw and Hassan Rahimi of Iran in the second draw.

- Just a few days ago after doping scandal Viktor Lebedev of Russia was brought back to the Olympics. Was this fact additional obstacle for fulfilling your plan?

- It did not matter for me. I was to fight for my goal and it was not important who I would wrestle against.

- You won all meetings in dramatic fight. You were wrestling very carefully. Was it your tactical plan?

- I lost a lot of weights and it effected on me. Perhaps, I made fans nervous but now they are happy with my success.

- Four years ago you went through to the final of London Olympic Games and you deserved winning gold medal but you lost due to biased refereeing…

- It is sport and everything happens. Sometimes you lost, sometimes you are oppressed. I did not remember that final. Winning Olympic championship title was the most important for me today.
