Unusually Poor European Championship

Georgian freestyle wrestling team showed unusually poor results in Stockholm – only Giorgi Elbakidze (58 kg) was able to hit the top three.

Goderdzi Dzebisashvili (54 kg) had the most real chance to win. In the main draw, he defeated Nicu Cataveica of Moldova (5:3), Dzianis Salavei of Belarus (6:0) and Dimitar Atanasov of Bulgaria (10:0). In semifinal, the Georgian lost to Georgios Pilidis of Greece (5:7) and made through to repechage, where lost to Sabutay Amishov of Azerbaijan (4:6) and took the 5th place.

In 54 kg weight category, Amiran Vakhtangishvili won over Johannes Maria Voegele of Germany (10:0). In 1/8 final, he lost to Bekkhan Ependiev of Russia (6:8) and stayed beyond the competition.

Today, Simon Beridze (46kg), Daniel Markarashvili (63kg), Mirian Maisuradze, Mikheil Bochoridze (both 76kg) and Elguja Balanchivadze (100kg) were involved in the competition, but ended up the Championship in the morning program.

After beating Octavian Mitu of Moldova (10:0) and Siarhei Kapytkou of Belarus (12:4), Simon Beridze lost to Asgar Mammadaliyev of Azerbaijan (1:7) and lost the bronze chance.

Daniel Markarashvili started from the 1/8 final and beat Taras Furman of Ukraine (10:4). In ¼ final, he lost to Adrian Wolny of Germany (1:2).

Mirian Maisuradze and Mikheil Bochoridze started well – they overcame 2-2 rounds and made through to ¼ final, but lost it.

Maisuradze won over Baris Dogan of Turkey (11:0) and Ivan Nedealco of Moldova (4:1) and lost to Johannes Martin Deml of Germany (2:4). Bochoridze defeated Ruben Tunyan of Armenia (10:1) and Stavros Alevizos of Greece (3:1), but could not do anything against Mert Cikmaz of Turkey (3:4).

Heavyweight Elguja Balanchivadze participated in the competition only once – in 1/8 final, he lost to Ali Aminzade of Azerbaijan (0:12).

Champions and prizewinners in women will be revealed tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. On the last two days of 6-day Championship Greco-Roman male wrestlers will participate.
