Medal-less Day and the Second Place

The Georgian judo team finished participating in Today Grand Slam with two medals. Today five members of Irakli Uznadze’s team wrestled on the Japanese tatami but none of them reached Top 3.

Beka Gviniashvili and Levan Matiashvili were close to the goal but finally, they took the 5th places and earned 100-100 ranking points.

Gviniashvili wrestled in 100 kg. He defeated Martin Pacek of Sweden and Zlatko Kumric of Croatia. The Georgian judoka lost gold-silver chance in ¼ final where he failed to world champion Ryunosuke Haga of Japan. In repechage semifinal Gviniashvili beat Jose Armenteros of Cuba. In “bronze final” the Georgian fell to Cyrille Maret of France.

In the second round another Georgian judoka Lasha Guruli also lost to Cyrille Maret.

Levan Matiashvili (+100 kg) beat Ahmed Wahid of Egypt but lost to Stanislav Bondarenko of Ukraine. In repechage Matiashvili won over Takeshi Ojitani of Japan but then failed to Daiki Kamikawa of Japan.

Adam Okruashvili (+100 kg) lost to Daiki Kamikawa in the second round.

The biggest disappointment for the Georgian fans was Varlam Liparteliani’s failure. He lost to Yuya Yoshida of Japan.

Georgia took the second place in unofficial team standings. Japan was the first with 11 gold medals.
