European Weightlifting Championship, which hosted by Tbilisi Sports Palace during 8 days, have completed. The last day of the tournament turned to be successful for the Georgian team, when they won 4 medals (3 silver, 1 bronze). Irakli Turmanidze (+105 kg) reached the biggest success, who gained all three silver medals. As for bronze, Davit Gogia (105 kg) earned it in snatch.
“World Sport” interviewed Kakhi Kakhiashvili, president of GWF and three-time Olympic champion.
-Are you satisfied with the Georgian team?
-It can be said that the plan is over fulfilled, because we had planned 2 medals and took 2 times more. Of course, I am satisfied with the result as well.
-From which weightlifters did you expect medals?
-From Turmanidze and Ramin Shamilashvili.
-What prevented Shamilashvili from winning medal?
-Ramin participates in 60 kg weight category for the most part. In this Championship, he had to take part in 50 kg. He lost many weight and this may explain why he stayed without medal.
-Let me ask you about organizational issues of the Championship. A few days before the competition, you said that holding the tournament was in danger. Are the organizational issues resolved already?
-We still have some financial problems and I hope it will soon be resolved.
-Will Georgia host any of international tournament, Championship or Activities in future?
-This year we will host the symposium and will discuss coaches. In 2018, the World Championship between 17 and 23 years old weightlifters will take place.
